Kangaroo Island off of Adelaide has to be one of the most spectacular places on earth that we have ever been! We are still attempting to edit down the over 1000 pictures that we took. Let’s start with our first night there and our 3 hour nocturnal tour, sometimes referred to as “dodging the Wallabies and Kangaroos”. Wallabies are essentially smaller marsupials, or as they say here, loke baby kangaroos.
Many of the more exotic animals are nocturnal and come out in droves at night. So after a walk on the beach at our hotel and a stop at The Kangaroo Island Yacht Club next door, we departed for our adventure. Nightlife everywhere, including the elusive Echidna, a marsupial from eons ago. It is known as a Monotreme, a mammal who lays eggs and then nurses their young by secreting milk on their chests, no breasts or nipples, and guards them in a pouch. It has quills like a porcupine but doesn’t shoot them. Look for the small snout at around 6:30 in the picture. It has a long sticky tongue that it uses to eat ants and termites.The Opossums were shy when we got close. The Blue Penguins are the smallest in the world and can only be seen at night…no puns about the red light district, it’s how we spot them.
