Be patient! We’ll get to the wildlife on the next installment. KI has some amazing geology between the granite outcroppings that have been molded over the millions of years and the white beaches from the limestone sediment throughout the island. The granite outcroppings are known as “Remarkable Rocks”, you can see why. Admirals Arch was also formed by years of erosion of the granite and limestone and has become a safe haven from sharks for Australian and New Zealand variety of fur seals.
There are three lighthouses on the island, all with interesting histories, but also hundreds of shipwrecks off the rocky coast as well. Many varieties of Eucalyptus trees ( about 40 varieties) and other tropical and subtropical growth as well. Believe it or not, the Koalas only feed on two types of Eucalyptus. The south side of the island is colder than the north as the cool waters of the Southern Ocean keep the temperatures down. It is also windswept but with beautiful azure waters. On a whimsical note, the locals will use anything for a mailbox, including old refrigerators or microwave ovens. Never dispose of something that still has a use, mate!
