During the day you don’t need to spend as much time dodging Wallabies and Kangaroos on the road, but you do need to be cautious as shown. In addition to the kangaroos and Wallabies, we also saw numerous beautiful multicolored Parrots, Cockatoos, and other birds, many too fast to photograph. We didn’t run into any snakes and were just as happy that we didn’t. We went to a beach that is home to Australian Sea-lions and walked amongst them. The viewing was as close if not closer than in the Galapagos. We found a newborn pup whose mom had gone to sea, and the pup was waiting for her return for his meal. Further up the road we came to a habitat for Australian and New Zealand fur seals. Many were busy playing in a pool above the ocean where they were safe from sharks. It was fun just watching them jump and play.
A word about Koalas. They eat only two varieties of Eucalyptus, don’t drink any water, and usually sleep 20 hours a day. Usually most people only see them balled up high up in a tree. Sort of like watching the Pandas sleep at the zoo. We hit the jackpot however. Even our guide was giddy. We came across a mom with a Joey in her pouch, when she suddenly decided to climb down the tree, walk right in front of us while the Joey climbed out of her pouch and on to her back, and then she commenced to climb a tree right next to us. After that Joey began to test his sea legs by leaving mom (maybe for the first time) and jumping from limb to limb in the tree. It was spectacular. Cheryl got some really great shots of this event.
