Gotta hand it to the Kiwis! Whether its bungy jumping, Parasailing, Speed boat racing, mountain biking, hang gliding, zip lines, canyon swings, or other extreme sports they have the world beat, hands down. And it’s epicenter is here in Queenstown!
We did not partake of many of these events, but after a wonderfully scenic drive from Te Anau to Queenstown we then spent the rest of the day testing the waters. We took a gondola up Bob’s Peak, about a 3000′ vertical steep climb. There we enjoyed a picnic lunch that we purchased in town along with some nice NZ Sauvignon Blanc. We all agreed that the view was worth the trip and that you could never find a more scenic dining experience. Then I took a chairlift slightly higher to do The Luge. It was a lot of fun and really quite tame. BTW- that picture of the bungy jumper was not Cheryl or me!
After coming off the peak, Cheryl and I decided to head to The Shotover Jet Boat in the Shotover Canyon. That was truly an adrenaline rush. Your take a jet boat, with a crazy Kiwi driver who accelerates up to 80 kilometers/hour, inches from the canyon wall. Then he throws in some 360* spins just to add to the fun. Cheryl was laughing all the way. It was great fun.
Finally on to Arrowtown which was an old gold mining town for a look. It is now a tourist trap, but main street was fun to stroll as all of the buildings are original.
Off to dinner soon. The weather looks as if it may turn tomorrow.
