This morning we were slated to go on a hunt for Sperm Whales and then this afternoon drive to The Wairu Valley in Marlborough for some of the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. As planning goes, it sometimes just isn’t as smooth sailing as you’d like (pun intended!) The morning whale watching was cancelled due to high seas. We rescheduled for this afternoon hoping that the seas would flatten out, although the boat operators had their doubts. Instead we drove up the coast to a seal habitat where there were lots of pups. It was fun. Checking back with the whale watch at noon, the trip was on! It was fantastic. All the way out to the whale area we had Dusky Dolphins playing around the boat. We also saw great birds including the largest breed of Albatross, the Wandering Albatross, with a wingspan of 9 feet! As well there were Shrearwaters and Petrels. Then…..Thar’ She Blows! We spotted two Sperm Whales lazing on the surface. They were huge. It was a great site. On the way back many more fur seals hanging on the off shore islands.
By the time we were done and after the 90 minute drive north, the vineyards were closed for the day, BUT….. There’s always tomorrow! And, oh yes, we did have a great bottle of Sauvignon with dinner.
