This afternoon Alan was emailed that he was re-elected to the Guilford Board of Education by a wide margin. Time to celebrate NZ style. We went to a Maori Traditional Hangi Feast and cultural experience. It was out first real opportunity to learn about The Maori origins from Polynesia and their traditional way of life before white settlement. The cultural show was very informative and the dinner of lamb and chicken was great. We finally got the see the elusive glow worms as well in their village tour. They have a beautiful spring with crystal clear water surrounded by glow worms when you turn the lights out.
The Maori used to use tattoos as a sign of belonging and status. As well they used exaggerated facial expressions and tongue movements to attempt to scare their enemies. The dancing was very similar to traditional Polynesian and in many ways had some traces of Hawaiian dance as well.
“Pretty scary, this face of mine” says the fierce warrior. “Yes, how do you do that but I’ve got this thing called a gun” says the English soldier. Hmmmm…
