Our last night was special. Jesus introduced us to Sandra Levinson. We had been hearing about her all week. Sandra runs The Center for Cuban Studies in NYC and helps support Cuban artists and display and sell their pieces throughout the USA. We met her at her apartment in the Miramar district and admired the many pieces of beautiful art. She then escorted us to a chamber orchestra concert in the Cathedral of San Francico de Assisi downtown to honor another American, Holly Block who had recently passed away at a relatively young age. Holly was the head of The Art Museum of the Bronx and also a supporter of the Cuban people. She spearheaded a fund raising campaign to bring a duplicate statue of Jose’ Marti displayed prominently in Central Park, NYC to Havana. It was dedicated on Jose’ Marti’s birthday in front of the Museum of the Revolution. The concert was fabulous. Then after a final stroll downtown off to dinner back in Miramar. Sandra and Jesus chose the Vistamar Restaurant right on the shoreline with waves breaking against the seawall. A fitting farewell dinner. The evening was still young however so Jesus wisked us off to the Fabrica de Arte Cubano. This is an artist’s collective with art and photography installations that change every 3 months, a community center, coffee shop, and multiple bars that really is a multimedia performance space. There are band performances and short movies running as well. This seems to be where the young of Havana hang out at night. It was a lot of fun and quite different.
