Ah, The Great Barrier Reef! It is everything they say it is and much more. We spent the full day on the reef at three different dive sites north of Port Douglas, an area of the reef known as Agincourt. Cheryl, Lois and Alan went snorkeling with a marine Biologist who pointed out various coral, marine life, and fish, while I did two SCUBA dives, also with a marine biologist, to depths of about 60′. I finished the day joining the crew for the last snorkel of the day.
We all agreed that the reef is absolutely the prettiest that we have seen. The colors and variety of coral were amazing. Animal life that we saw included sea turtles, a reef shark, several giant squid, rays, huge (better than four feet long) clams that were hundreds of years old and still alive, giant bull head parrot fish, along with the usual assortment of brightly colored fish darting in and out of the coral.
Sorry to report that although I did have a digital camera and took some very colorful pictures, I am unable to post them at present and will do so as soon as I have the computer capacity to load them to our iPad (computer use here in AU is very difficult for tourists and sometimes you just can’t finesse the system). In the meantime here’s some other shots from the day.
