Today was an exercise is Obama Avoidance. We adjusted our schedules to go where he had not yet been, or go after he had left. Having said that we still got turned around numerous times today due to security and closed highways. We did manage however, to get to all of the sites that we had planned on. First was Humayum’s Tomb. A Mughal king from the 1500’s who established a small city in Delhi. His tomb is supposedly the original inspiration for the Taj Mahal. There were several other tombs in the same enclave under various states of rehabilitation that we also visited. From there it was on to the largest Muslim Mosque in Delhi, the Jama Masjid Mosque. Surrounding the mosque is a large market, the Chandni Chock. We took a bicycle rickshaw through the market which was fascinating. Everything and anything you could want from stolen car parts to live chickens, fish and other foods, as well as wedding dresses and other brightly colored clothing. Finally we went to Gandhi’s cremation site, RajGhat, which is a national memorial.
A hour or two to rest up then off to dinner on the roof top of our hotel at the Villa Medici Restaurant. I don’t think Indian fare is the menu for tonight.
