Awoke today to cloudy skies but no rain in the forecast. Our Marina has free bikes which we took advantage of right after breakfast. Oxford is a small town supported by the maritime industry. They have a small history museum and a lot of picket fences. In fact the town has a fence painting contest for charity. Some examples are seen. Then we took the Oxford-Bellvue Ferry (oldest private ferry in the nation, circa 1680’s) and rode our bikes to Royal Oak- a town so sleepy that even the general store was closed! We were searching for the cannonball from the War of 1812 that was embedded in an oak tree near the post office. No luck! We went into the post office to inquire and there was the cannonball. The tree had died and was cut down. Dinner at The Robert Morris Inn, a favorite of James Michner.
