Sunny and 85* today. We traded in our sails for some wheels, lent to us by a fellow sailor Sean Saylor from Smith’s Creek. We explored southern Calvert County in Maryland, first going to Point Lookout. This was the site of a Union prison camp during the civil war that held as many as 20,000 rebel prisoners. Over 3,300 perished from starvation and disease. The fort is gone but there is a museum and monuments to the tragedy. A short drive away is the ongoing restoration and archaeological site of St. Mary’s City. The first capital of the colony of Maryland dating to the early 1600’s. The city was abandoned for Annapolis after 50 years or so, but is being restored in part to illustrate what life was like in the early days of colonization of America. There was also a working replica of the ship “Dove” which was one of two ships that originally brought people and supplies from England to Maryland.
