This morning began with several cataract surgeries performed by our local ophthalmologist, Dr. Carlos Gonzolez and myself. After that it was off with our team to La Merced Market for the local Ecuadoran delicacy, baked pork ( Los Hernandos de Merced). The entire pig is baked over an open spit and served with local corn (huge kernels), sauce, and for us fresh raspberry juice. Then it was off to Chimboraso Volcano. It is the tallest mountain in Ecuador at just under 21,000 ft, is snowcapped year round and actually since we are just a hair below the equator it is the closest point on earth to the sun! The views were breath taking, and the temperature where we were at about 15,000 ft. elevation was freezing. As we arrived later in the afternoon we didn’t have time to hike all the way to the snowfields at the end of the glacier for a snowball fight. We had great views of the other two volcanos that ring Riobamba (both active) as the skies were crystal clear. We bought some Cocoa tea from the local women who told us that is what they use to ward off altitude sickness. Also saw a lot of wild Vicuna (a close kin of the alpaca) on the high alpine tundra. This was actually our first day (actually half day) off in the 5 years that we have been coming to our clinic. Tomorrow it’s back to a full day of work somewhere in the city.
