Our last day was reserved for a bit of fun, a waterfall tour north of Banos in the canyon of the Rio Pastasa and our 6 hour drive back out of the Andes to the coastal city of Guayaquil. After a filling breakfast and a quick photo op at our hotel we drove along the canyon wall (only a bit scary) to look at some of the numerous waterfalls along the route. Most of the group took a cable car zip ride across the gorge. We cancelled our hike to another fall as a heavy mist had enveloped the area and none of us felt like doing the long drive while being wet. We actually turned around in the small town of Puyo, where we had been stranded for several hours in a tunnel three years ago by a rockslide at the far end of the tunnel. The trip down the Andes was as scenic as ever, with the usual numerous hairpin turns and frequent areas of rocks and standing water across the road. When we reached the coastal plain it was mile upon mile of banana plantations and sugar plantations. Note the bags around the bunches of bananas that are almost ready to be picked for export. Before heading to the hotel we made a quick stop at the bridge connecting the mainland to the island preserve of Isla Santay to watch the sunset over Guayaquil. A wonderful Peruvian dinner and now its off to sleep for our early morning flight to JFK. Adios amigos!
