Our next island visit was to Korcula, the birthplace of you know who. This island is another favored spot for Europeans to vacation. The tip of Korcula’s old town again dates back to the ancient Greeks, although most architecture presently is Romanesque. As it was initially an Island, the Great Land Gate welcomes you into the old town. There is one main street running to the other end of town, with smaller side street running down to the town wall at the water’s edge like the skeleton of a fish. Of course at the high point is St. Mark’s Plaza and cathedral. On one of the side streets is supposedly the site of Marco Polo’s birthplace, with a roof top porch, but historically this fact may be debatable. Numerous cafes line the waterfront and people watching at lunch is always fun. Then it was off to the town of Lumbarda where they had nice sandy beaches and crystal clear water. On the way back to Korcula city we stopped at a local family run (for 10 generations) vineyard that grows a grape exclusive to the island called Grk. This is because this grape needs sandy soil and the rest of the entire country of Croatia is mostly limestone and Travertine. The view during the tasting could not be beat.
