We departed JFK for our overnight flight to Guayaquil. The scenery on our trip up the Andes was spectacular as always, although there were a few more landslides on the road then we had last year. We stopped at our favorite roadside banana stand where you can pick from a myriad of varieties and colors. Other fresh tropical fruits were available as well. After we settled in to our hotel and had lunch (4 full courses for $4.50 per person) Cheryl and I went on a hunt to the local outdoor markets in search of Alpaca. We saw some nice things but will look further. We then walked around the historic district for a bit. I’m scheduled to do surgery with our resident ophthalmologist from Nicaragua tomorrow, and Cheryl and Ray will get us all set for our first journey to the tribal regions on Monday.
