We flew to Madeira this morning about 600 miles out in the Atlantic off of the African coast. It is a volcanic island with steep cliffs cascading into the ocean. Its subtropical climate is also perfectly suited for spectacular growth of plants and flowers. Our hotel, Quinta Jardins do Lago is a perfect example of how lovely it is here. We relaxed by the pool and strolled the gardens on the property before heading to dinner. We even met up with Colombo, the local resident Galapagos tortoise.
