A vast bulk of the Cuban tobacco industry is family owned. The farmer is guaranteed a price by the government (whether the crop yield is good or not) and must sell 90% of his crop to the state. The other 10% he and can keep to make his own hand rolled cigars to sell privately. These are the really good ones that we don’t frequently see here. We went to Finca (farm) de Alfredo. Tobacco is grown to strict standards during the dry season, and then dried and cured in thatched huts for several months. To his cigars Alfredo adds a dash of honey, and other secret ingredients before rolling them. An instructive and fun time was had by all.
