Kiwi Trivia: Did You Know That Milford Sound is One of the Wettest Places on Earth? We Found That Out Today!

When we awoke it was cloudy and windy. Driving over the mountain pass to Milford Sound (an adventure in itself) the rain became steady, hard, and wind blown sideways. Although we were high enough at times to be driving through snowfields, fortunately it didn’t snow. Milford Sound gets approximately 25″ to 30″ of rain every month! As it is a magnificent fiord (rated the best in the world) hundreds of waterfalls develop from thousands of feet above sea level and tumble down into the sound. The mountains rimming the Sound are up to almost 6000 feet high although we could not see the peaks in the rain. If it is dry for two days only 4 waterfalls remain permanently. We had to cancel our trek due to the wet conditions, but were able to take the boat tour of the Sound. In addition to the magnificent falls we were able to see dolphin, fur seals, and Crested Penguins.

Dinner tonight was at the local pizza and pasta place. Smoked Salmon pizza and Venison meatballs. Quite unique.
