The morning was spent on a 3 1/2 hour Jeep tour through the Canyon de Chelly. Here we saw cave dwellings, petroglyphs and pictographs dating back over 900 years and encompassing Native American tribes from the Anasazi through the Navajo. The Canyon loomed at times up to 1000′ feet above us as we drove through the “wash.” The sites unbelievable. After lunch we drove to the Hopi Reservation and were fortunate enough to join the local tribe in their town of Shungopavi on Second Mesa for the festival of the harvest. This was not a tourist event. We were invited to mingle with the residents and their children, into some of their homes, witness their lives, and observe special celebratory dances. It was amazing but no pictures were allowed. These memories will have to live in our hearts.
