Arriving at our castle in Obidos we learned that there was a large peace garden called the Buddha Eden founded by the owner of the Bacalhoa Wine Company after the Taliban and ISIS destruction of many prominent Buddhist sites in the Middle East. It has and continues to expand into a very extensive sculpture collection to include African, Asian and contemporary sculpture in a beautiful garden setting spread out over many acres. We were lucky enough to spend time with the curator who was developing a new section. It was quite an experience. Also the wine tasting was excellent and we bought 3 bottles, each for about € 4.00.
Afterwards we drove to the beach town of Nazare where we had lunch on the beach and then strolled around for a bit. The boats on the beach are the local Portugese fishing boats. They still bring their catch on to the beach and dry them in the sun, especially their local speciality, sardines. The elderly women wearing black are widows, who once their husbands die wear black for the rest of their lives. A testament to the way life was, and still is.
