Porto is a city that slopes fairly steeply down to the Douro River so you always start your tour in the upper city and end in the Ribiera district. We began at the Ingreja dos Clerigos. The attraction here is ths Bell Tower which is the highest point in Porto with 360* views of the city and Gaia across the river. Over 200 steps up but after Lumega it was a piece of cake. Next stop was the Sao Bento train station, renowned for its blue tile walls. Then down ever winding narrow streets past the Palacio das Cardosas, Praca da Bathala, National Theater, Se’ Cathedral, City Hall and the large Praca in front of it, the old market decked out in red wrought iron, Palacio da Bolsa (now the stock exchange), Casa do Infante where Heny the Navigator was born, and finally the Cais da Ribiera on the waterfront. We explored the waterfront area and had a lovely dinner at a fish restaurant there. Enough for day 1 in Porto.
